Third Grade: Bears

Third Grade Bear Scouts begin working in earnest on service, faith, and outdoor skills.

Bear Scouts who are new to scouting begin with earning the Bobcat Rank, which focuses on learning the various signs, oaths, and codes of Scouting. It’s a great introduction to what Scouting is all about.

In addition to the six required adventures and one elective, Bear Scouts earn the coveted “Whittling Chip” award by learning and practicing pocketknife safety. Earning the award entitles the Scout to carry a pocketknife for Scouting activities.

Bear Required Adventures

  • Baloo the Builder: Focuses on proficiency with handtools.
  • Bear Claws: Focuses on pocketknife use and safety.
  • Bear Necessities: Focuses on outdoor skills & camping.
  • Fellowship and Duty to God: Focuses on faith & practice.
  • Fur, Feathers, & Ferns: Focuses on wildlife and nature knowledge.
  • Paws for Action: Focuses on service, patriotism, and community.

When Bears complete Adventures, they earn awards. Each award takes the form of a belt loop that Bears can add to their uniform belt and wear to display their progress toward earning the Bear rank badge.
